Funeral Details

Uncle Bob always had the greatest stories even going back to when I was a small child. I have fond memories of him visiting when we would visit my grandmother Florence. He would often share stories of the 30's, 40's and 50's on our phone calls. We would talk about finances, religion, politics in a variety of other topics. I also had the great privilege of introducing him to my wife via phone. He will be dearly missed. I know he is with his sister ( my grandmother), Aunt Beryl, my great-grandparents and our other relatives. Rest in Peace Uncle Bob.

Back in 1980, Dorene and I wanted to get married, but we had a problem. Dorene's family were Baptists and I was an atheist. Her family rejected the possibility of a Unitarian minister, and I did not want a religious-tinged ceremony at all. My mother Florence called her brother Bob and laid the problem in his lap. Fortunately, one of Bob's tennis partners was Seymour Simon, an Illinois appellate court judge who had his eye on the state Supreme Court. By plying Judge Simon with campaign contributions, Bob persuaded him to officiate at our wedding. Uncle Bob came through; and Dorene and I have been married 44 years.

Elegy For Robert Fine

With fine features and a sharp mind
Neighbor Bob was not one to fall behind.

Used to hard work, he plugged along
At home and job, both competent and strong.

Music, he loved, from “William Tell,”
To Pollini’s Chopin, bright as a bell,

And poetry, Keats to Ogden Nash,
The solemn ode alongside satire’s lash.

He rests, now, in memory’s vault,
Good, kind, and wise, and done with Time’s assault.

You touched many hearts and you were the most kind man who helped a lot of people.

Uncle Bob was one of the most well learned and wise people I have ever known in my life. From as early I can remember I always looked forward to visiting Chicago to see my extended family. Uncle Bob was a large part of the reason I looked forward to Chicago every year. He wove his knowledge and experiences into entrancing stories of our collective family history. I wish I could have spent more time with him and the rest of our family. I can only hope that I will one day be such a positive role model in the lives of my family. I know that you are still here in all our hearts. You have left a lasting impact on my life, and the lives of everyone who had the privilege of meeting you. I will miss you dearly.

I remember Bob as my neighbor growing up in Albany Park. He was a nice man and I remember playing hopscotch with Marla and Larry. He will be missed.
